Another approach is to pick just one aspect of a topic, take a stand on it and then support your assertion in the article.

You can report on the news item, without plagiarizing, and explain why it matters to the audience. Also, it breaks-up the usual forms of article or content writing and will engage your site visitors.
Yet another unique method of producing content that is different is to have a mock debate with an expert in your niche. Of course you will not need to contact the person and actually hold a debate, although you could try that. Instead, you find an article written about some debatable topic, and then you write your article, outlining what is being discussed and then present your counter-argument. But still, this is something very rarely seen in places like article directories, and publishing this on your site will provide new and engaging reading.
